Red Feather Desktop Wallpaper

It started as a little something for Smashing Magazine’s February Desktop Calendars but then with a little correction needed here and there it just wasn’t worth the effort to send it off to them. And, to be honest, while I like to support Smashing for being one of the awesomest web resources out there I have to admit it’s more or less free work that they really don’t give a toss whether it comes or goes. So I won’t be sending anything off to Smashing in future, Red Feather belongs here until the end of February. And who doesn’t like a nice brightly coloured natural off the bird eco-friendly feather? I hope you download it and enjoy.

World Harvest and Natural Grid Calendars

I sent two December desktop wallpapers into Smashing Magazine this month titled World Harvest and Natural Grid. They’re a little dark and moody.

World Harvest: a graphic novella relates to a side project that I’m working on over the summer (which has slipped by the way a little over the last week). It’s based on a dark future only a few decades further into our current misdirection.

Natural Grid uses a photograph of the Tesselated Pavement at Eagle Hawk Neck in Tasmania. The grid is carved out of solid rock over time by the action of the ocean and salt.

I’ve also uploaded a 1024 x 768 version of each for those who don’t run higher resolutions. ~~World Harvest calendar at 1024 x 768~~ and ~~World Harvest no calendar at 1024 x 768~~. And ~~Natural Grid calendar at 1024 x 768~~ and ~~Natural Grid no calendar at 1024 x 768~~.

Disturbing Desktops: Our Little Psychopath

Taken from The Human Pitbull desktop posted earlier today – Our Little Psychopath. I’d be very interested in anyone disturbed enough to actually have one of these obtrusive desktops for any length of time. I found both of them to be highly destabilising. We went to a Mike Parr exhibition – he is an artist intent on disturbing the viewer. His Dog’s Don’t Notice from the Biennale of Sydney, August 2008 might give you an idea of how he works.

It’s quite disturbing looking into the eyes of a directly gazing and focused human face. It lasted about an hour on my desktop and then it made me feel very similar to some of Mike Parr’s performance work. I’m also aware that culturally this could have an even greater offence to other populations.

Playing around with some December Desktop Wallpaper ideas this week I decided to create an underworld crime character theme. If it looks disturbing it’s because that’s the intention. Raw and psychopathic. But if you’re into unpretty things then here you go – coming to a horror video game near you very soon… I’m sure.
