Christmas 2009 as a Freshly Shot Duck

Another Christmas is over (a shot duck) and we had many overseas and interstate visitors in various rooms using every available matress and pillow at our disposal. Much beer was consumed – Cascade Blonde, Fat Yak Pale Ale, Cooper’s Best Extra Stout and several Moo Brew Dark Ale. There was also nice Tasmanian wine – a bottle of Kinvarra Pinot Noir Brut, Ninth Island Pinot Noir and Clemens Hill Sauvignon Blanc. Not to mention Baileys Irish Cream.

Our Christmas brought food and plenty of sweets as well so the festive mood was thick on the ground, the Christmas tree rampant and the conversation nostalgic… But I have to admit to starting a little early and partaking a little above my acceptable level of decency. Overall it was a fun mid-summer’s day with nice company… which brings me to the presents…

My presents this year were quite interesting… Miche made a donation in my name representing half an acre of land to the Tasmanian Land Conservancy… I also received a bunch of white socks (never trust a man in white socks), a 2010 planner, a stainless steel Avanti 4 cup espresso maker, What the Dog Saw by Malcolm Gladwell, Confessions of an Eco-Sinner by Fred Pearce, Monkeyluv by Robert M. Sapolsky, The Accidental Guerilla by David Kilcullen and a hand made pillow cover and small painting we’ve already framed from my dear sister in Queensland.

Overall it was a nice day with some inebriating fine pleasures – of which life should be more inclusive – and we’re now looking down the barrel of a brand new year. Oh 2010 may just be the year I ditch instant coffee altogether and actually become management material.

So to all my friends around the globe who I don’t normally get to see in person I’d like to say a Merry Christmas and I hope you enjoy the festive season. A special Merry Christmas goes to Brett Drinkwater at Tashosting who has supported a number of us with free hosting and web support on various projects including weblogs and NPO work. And a momentously Merry Christmas to my dispersed family in their various family celebrations.

Because life is good. While Christmas 2009 is a shot duck we’re looking forward to more of them. Onward and upward.

I should also count those Etnia Barcelona Edmonton frames I treated myself to and the 1TB Western Digital External Hard Drive that jumped into my hand in this morning’s Boxing Day Sales…

not to be smug but sometimes i think suburbia runs better on single malt whiskey, an illustration by Steven Clark

Glass raised Matt… not that I drank all that on my own… and there’s some left (honest)… a bit of a fetish for Moo Brew and Fat Yak though…

Nearly time to click over that new year again.

Ansel Adams: The Camera

As the first of three parts of Ansel Adams Photography Series, Ansel Adams: The Camera begins by discussing the idea of visualisation in relation to photography. Ansel Adams is a master of his craft; this series has sat on my backburner for some time. Book 2 in this series is The Negative and it's followed up by The Print. In them Ansel outlines his philosophy of photography rather than trying to lay down a set of rules. This first instalment is a technical book that explains the good old fashion film camera.
