Ian Tomlinson’s G20 Murder on Video

Ian Tomlinson, on his way home from work through the area where the G20 protests were happening, gets attacked from behind by riot police as he casually strolls with hands in pockets. He sits for about 10 seconds talking to the police, then gets up dazed and wanders off the video. Just down the road Ian Tomlinson – not a protestor, let alone a resistance to the authorites collapses and dies. Goodbye. End of story.

The Guardian.co.uk have a video online which shows Ian being attacked in slow motion and the last view of him walking off camera before his death. It’s a powerful condemnation on the totalitarian state being constructed, particularly around Britain. There should be no place in the free world, if I can pull that old phrase out of the magician’s hat for an encore, that the police should ever kill an innocent civilian on his way home from work with his hands in his pockets. Nor should it kill protestors to the G20 Summit. Nor anyone, for that matter.

So my big question for the day: when will that officer or those officers be charged with the cold blooded criminal murder of Ian Tomlinson?

If you’re a Brit I’d implore you to get on the phone to your political representatives and the police department and demand an answer to that very question. The only response to this can be disgust – please don’t just ignore it like suburban twats.

What the Dog Saw by Malcolm Gladwell

Malcolm Gladwell's What the Dog Saw: and other adventures has been on my radar for some time. His book Outliers is also waiting on my bookshelf to be read and I'm itching to read Blink and will probably get hold of a copy of The Tipping Point some time during this year. I've read and heard Malcolm Gladwell at places like the New Yorker and on Radio Lab and that exposure over time has brought me to his published works. What the Dog Saw is a collection of some of Malcolm's best articles from his career since 1996 at The New Yorker where he writes intelligent and quirky contributions to impact the way readers think about ourselves and relationships with the world around us.
