Finally, I’m an Educated Man!

This time tomorrow night I’ll be a member of the UTAS alumni from the Department of Science, Engineering and Technology’s Bachelor of Computing. Fancy initials after my name and all that academic hoo-ha with flat hats and old scholars handing out bits of rolled up paper. Finally, I’m an educated man! Or, at least, I can stop worrying about being a poor undergraduate and get on with the job of being an impoverished post graduate embarking on the path to my Master of Business Administration (MBA).

Which made an old illustration I published here last year come to mind. One’s favourite social sigh is most definately a bottle of single malt whiskey. The one that inspired that illustration was sent from Scotland, purchased from a small local distillery. It was awesomely excellent. Trust the bloody Scots, ay. The sentiment remains… not to be smug but…

Rob Goodlatte has a great post about following your passion rather than being funnelled into the career you’re pushed – it’s called Passionless Pre-professionals.

What I learned from a Bachelor of Computing is that I don’t want to be a programmer (vomit, vomit). I enjoy design. I enjoy writing. I enjoy thinking about business models. But for fuck sake kick me in the arse if you see me working as a programmer!

Web developer? No probably not. Web designer, maybe but I’m fussy about who I work with / for because it can be a brilliant job or a crap soul eating chore.

And I could always sit down and write a novel right?

Ansel Adams: The Camera

As the first of three parts of Ansel Adams Photography Series, Ansel Adams: The Camera begins by discussing the idea of visualisation in relation to photography. Ansel Adams is a master of his craft; this series has sat on my backburner for some time. Book 2 in this series is The Negative and it's followed up by The Print. In them Ansel outlines his philosophy of photography rather than trying to lay down a set of rules. This first instalment is a technical book that explains the good old fashion film camera.
