2009 Calendar Pack: A Present

A special thankyou to my sister Sue for sending me a graduation gift of the 2009 Calendar Pack from WineSelectors. The delivery man was very happy to part ways with the super heavy parcel including a bottle of Elliot Rocke Estate Semillon 2007, Thorn Clarke Sorriso Rosé 2007, Hope Estate Merlot 2007, Chatto Circus Series High Wire Verdelho 2007, DiGiorgio Lucindale Cabernet Sauvignon 2005, Mountadam Barossa Shiraz 2005, Peter Lehmann Eden Valley Riesling 2008, Symphonia La Solista Tempranillo 2006, TarraWarra Tin Cows Chardonnay 2005, K1 by Geoff Hardy Pinot Noir 2007, Survey Station Sauvignon Blanc 2008, and La Vie Pinot Noir Chardonnay NV. The packaging looks very tasty and I look forward to exercising my neanderthal bogun palette over the Christmas holiday.

Booked my gown for the opening and paid up front this morning, and also received a first round offer from the University of Tasmania to do a Master of Business Administration (Spec) over the next two years full time – a mere increase onto my university debt of AUD$13,000 plus books and lost wages. I’ve got to think about that one for a couple of days, but unless someone has a reasonable offer that precludes me being a muppet programmer then I’ll probably do the next two years of study.

So, thanks sister Sue. It was very nice of you to think of me and I’ll have to send you something small back for Christmas this year.

Currently Reading The Accidental Guerrilla by David Kilcullen

Late last year I watched an address to the Australian National Press Club from counter-terrorism expert and author of The Accidental Guerrilla: Fighting Small Wars in the Midst of a Big One , David Kilcullen. In that address he mentioned the period after World War 2 when, in retrospect, we had wars against colonialisation as countries pushed back against dominating forces. Similarly, when we look back at the current wars we’ll see them as wars against globalisation – people pushing back against the tide of world wide Americanisation and globalised culture. David Kilcullen is there to inform us that what the American government are group-labeling global terrorists are more often than not local insurgents with local concerns. Understanding this crucial point and unraveling the complexity of the enemy is crucial to America's success in the field.
