Boag Vs Rissington (a Web Somme in Jelly)

As a prolific podcast listener I’d have to ask myself (and others) who the winner would be in a jelly wrestle between The Rissington Podcast and the Boagworld Podcast? We’ll call this the battle of the Web Somme; an in the trenches pitched assault whose first sortie took down the Boagworld (Boagworld, World of Boag) interlude. Bloody nice shooting, wot! Although I kind of miss it Paul, bring it back.

As a colonial its important to weigh up the two opponents before placing my 20 cent bet. In the Blue Corner sit Paul Boag and his straightman Marcus Lillington (of Headscape) - try to picture Batman and Robin without the gay costumes. They’ve pummelled out 122 episodes of highly informative web standards lacrosse. Their army of loyal devotees worship DOCTYPE as God and are willing to suffer minor abrasions in a quirky suburban English manner - with humour and a hard cup of tea.

In the skies Paul and Marcus would be the aces defending a very British Tradition of the BBC and Thames Television logos. Hand to hand I think they’d be a solid pair of knobbly fellas willing to break a hatstand or two. Seriously. Maybe even a pint glass.

In the Red Corner, John (What the Fuck) Oxton and Jon (What the Fuckerer) Hicks occupy a certain portion of the ex-RAF airbase in Upper Rissington. Their irreverant worshipping of the same DOCTYPE as God, and with next to no flying experience between them by Episode 14, provide the home ground advantage only if the scrap winds down to a hand-to-hand jolly old whalloping behind the bicycle shed (or with expensive pencils and seriously illegal font activity). The Rissington Podcast is a more casual and irreverant affair along the lines of Michael Palin’s Ripping Yarns crossed with The Young Ones.

Had I more than 20 cents at this time of the week I’d be tempted to hedge my bets on this one. We’ve got the old sentimental Boagworld versus the sometimes flagrant coffee house at Rissington. Tough call. Who do you think would win a pitched battle between the Rissington Podcast and the Boagworld Podcast? Who would win the Battle of the Web Somme?

Paul and Marcus would win, to be fair to John and Jon though: Boagworld have been doing it for a lot longer!

ha ha true Matt. I’m a big Boagworld fan from way back, too. I think they’re both aimed at slightly different approaches, which is refreshing.

I’m not sure how they’d go in hand to hand combat though… especially in jelly. :)

BTW what other podcasts do you listen to regularly? I listen to WebAxe and generally try to keep up with conference podcasts as they come available. @media had good ones the last few years. And don’t forget Jared Spool’s SpoolCasts, they’re good…

Oh, boy! It’s not easy. On one hand Paul and Marcus have been doing for a long time now, and have the experience and know-how. On the other, John and Jon have a very different approach. If this was a Mexican wrestling match (now, that’s an idea!) Boagworld would be the “technique” side while Rissington would be the “tough” wrestlers.

Hmmm… I think that Rissington would win the first “fall”, but Boagworld would take the next two to prevail in the end. Most likely with Paul and Marcus holding John and Jon in a double-nelson combination.

Ha ha, yeh I was meaning to mention Nacho Libre in the post but forgot. Dammit! Yes I envision Oxton as a stretchy pants man, for sure.

Yes I think I get a lot more information out of Paul Boag and Marcus Lillington, to be fair. Marcus is a dark horse and may well be a ring-in with a hell of a back-street forearm jolt. Good call on the technique versus tough, too.

I’d have to stretch my loyalty to Boagworld for the bet then - 20 cents in the center (or is it centre) and a bonus marble for anyone who gives out a black eye!

And, Paul, if you hear me down in the trenches - bring back the World of Boag. Don’t listen to the critics.

    Hello Rissington… Rissington?

There has been no radio contact with Rissington since episode 15 about a month or so ago? Should I get the tank, mummy?

I like playing with the tank wot.
