Dean’s Honour Roll of Excellence

My letter came this morning notifying that I have achieved the Dean’s Honour Roll for Excellence for the faculty of Science, Engineering & Technology at the University of Tasmania in 2007. So that was pretty cool news. My second year was a bit flat in the marks department and my average dropped from 80% to the mid 70’s and has now picked back up to 78% with only two project units to complete this year.

This year I’m finishing my Bachelor of Computing degree with Software Engineering Project. My team (cardio) consists of five very diverse personalities and skillsets. We bring different things to project.

We are developing an interactive assessment and learning tool to address the cardiovascular disease problem. A major issue in society that rubs shoulders with the aging crisis, rising obesity, diabetes, lifestyle and healthy eating. So it will be a challenge. The aim is to provide a microsite which provides educational content plus this interactive tool where you enter your details such as height, weight and cholesterol and then you’re given reasonable recommendations and advice for your personal situation. It will be interesting if nothing else and we are emphasising web standards best practice, accessibility and usability from the ground up. Which, I should point out, is government policy.

Project reminds me of that scene in Apocolypse Now when Kilgore stands on the sandbar in the middle of a 5th Air Cavalry battle and says “I love the smell of napalm in the morning”. And likens it to the smell of victory.

So there’s my current position at university. I have some copy writing work which is apparently arriving any time to save me from abject poverty and a few web projects in the wind but overall its just a year about finishing project. And next year I’d expect to apply for the University School of Business Graduate Management Program to work towards a Masters of Business Administration. That’s the objective.

Andy Clarke's Transcending CSS: the fine art of web design has been sitting on my bookshelf for several months and I've finally made the time to read it from end to end. My favourite thing about this book from the outset is that it's a designer's book, rather than a technician's manual, for web designers. The artwork and direction in Transcending CSS is enhanced by the attention to detail in the feel and texture of the book itself, the size of it's pages and the feel of the cover in your hands. It's definately a book that affords the act of being read. Looking forward to it.
