10,000 at Pulp Mill Rally Hobart
We were out in the rain this afternoon in Franklin Square, inner city Hobart, for the protest march against our government subsidising a pulp mill in the Tamar Valley - the biggest pulp mill in the world southern hemisphere. We won’t mention the name of the company who will own this mill because anyone who criticises that company gets sued out of a house and livelihood. The era of free speech about the environment has passed by without much of a murmer.
We had an estimated 10,000 people at the rally. I believe that’s more than the number who attended the anti-dams protests back in the early 1980’s which saw an epic battle on the Franklin River which saved it to this day.
I’m not an overly motivated protestor. You could say that the simple fact I am protesting is a remarkable statement about the desparate line in the sand we have to draw on this pulp mill. We need to stand up to Paul Lennon, the company and the corruption that is masked as economic development for Tasmania. Here are some photos of the protest.
